Jake Robertson: The Journey of Dreams and Determination

Imagine standing at the starting line, heart racing, and feeling the weight of your dreams on your shoulders.
This is where Jake Robertson's journey begins—a story of unwavering determination, relentless hard work, and a passion for running that knows no bounds.

Leaving Home for a Dream
Growing up in Hamilton, New Zealand, Jake Robertson was driven by an insatiable passion for running. Always finishing at the top in school races, he couldn't settle for anything less than victory. At just 17, Jake made the courageous decision to leave everything behind and move to Iten, Kenya. This high-altitude training mecca, known for producing world-class runners, became his new home—a place where he would push his limits and chase his dreams.

Finding Support and Success
In Kenya, Jake faced extreme challenges. Living in a tiny room with just a thin mattress—his 'concrete cell'—he had little money and knew few people. The harsh conditions and isolation were daunting, but Jake's unwavering focus on excelling in running kept him going. Every day, he ran countless miles in the high-altitude environment, pushing his body and mind to their limits.

The first couple of years were particularly brutal. Battling harsh weather and tough terrain, Jake faced immense physical and mental challenges. Yet, his resilience never wavered. His dedication caught the attention of Saif Saaeed Shaheen, a former world champion, who became a mentor and supporter. With Shaheen's guidance, Jake found the stability he needed to focus entirely on his training—a turning point in his journey.

Jake's training regimen was grueling. A typical workout might include 4x6km runs at a 3:05 per km pace, with the final km at a blistering 2:50 pace, and moderate recovery runs in between. Despite the exhaustion, Jake’s hard work began to pay off. He set a New Zealand national record in the marathon with a time of 2:08:26 at the Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan, breaking a 34-year-old record. He also achieved a personal best of 59:57 in the largest half marathon in the world at the Great North Run in Britain.
Distance | Time |
---|---|
1 Mile | 4:01.82 |
5km | 13:15 min |
10km | 27:28 min (National Record) |
Half Marathon | 59:57 min |
Marathon | 2:08:26 (National Record) |

Overcoming Challenges
Jake's journey wasn't without setbacks. In 2015 and 2016, he faced recurring calf injuries that left him sidelined and frustrated. Despite seeing numerous physios, the root cause of his pain remained elusive. The physical and emotional toll was immense, and there were moments when Jake wondered if he would ever compete again.
Finally, a breakthrough came. Dr. Webbourn diagnosed a back issue causing the calf problems. Specifically, Jake was suffering from sciatic nerve friction originating from his back, which resulted in calf strains, hamstring issues, and lower back tightness.
With targeted rehabilitation, Jake focused on strength and conditioning, integrating specific exercises to address his back and prevent future injuries. This disciplined approach to recovery not only healed his injuries but also made him stronger and more resilient.

Having battled through these challenges and overcoming his injuries, Jake possesses a deep, firsthand understanding of injury management. His journey through intense rehabilitation and recovery has equipped him with invaluable insights on how to effectively handle and prevent such issues in other athletes.
Imagine having access to the wisdom of someone who has conquered the same hurdles you're facing.
Jake's personal experience transforms him into a guiding light for runners, offering strategies to stay healthy and competitive.
